{"id":187,"date":"2008-12-19T23:17:00","date_gmt":"2008-12-20T05:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.philhassey.com\/blog\/?p=187"},"modified":"2008-12-19T23:20:05","modified_gmt":"2008-12-20T05:20:05","slug":"setting-up-my-mac-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.philhassey.com\/blog\/2008\/12\/19\/setting-up-my-mac-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Setting up my Mac (part 2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Okay, I&#8217;m going to syndicate this to the python planets, because well .. it seems general enough of interest that maybe other python folks might be interested. \u00a0However, if this sort of stuff is unwanted, please tell me and I&#8217;ll reign in my planet posts to being on-topic.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anti-Virus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, I think I&#8217;m going to go with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eset.com\/\">eset nod32<\/a> anti-virus. \u00a0From my research there are about a dozen pretty good anti-virus solutions. \u00a0I had tried this one out about half a year ago, and I found that it didn&#8217;t drain system resources. \u00a0My main objective with anti-virus is to have *something* and have it stay out of my way. \u00a0This one has one several awards in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.av-comparatives.org\/\">the past few years<\/a>, so I guess it must be decent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Folder Sync<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I mentioned in my last post that I really wanted to be able to sync my photos, music, and documents between several machines. \u00a0I would use subversion, except somehow it just doesn&#8217;t seem like &#8220;the right tool&#8221; for the task of managing 1000s of photos and mp3s.<\/p>\n<p>What I did find is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cis.upenn.edu\/~bcpierce\/unison\/\">Unison File Synchronizer<\/a>, which appears to do exactly what I want. \u00a0If we have a photo gallery and we add pictures to it, those pictures will get automagically synced to a central server and then automagically synced back to other machines. \u00a0It wouldn&#8217;t be a useful solution for source control, but it looks like a nice solution for managing a photo \/ music \/ document collection.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve only given it the five minute inspection, so I can&#8217;t say for sure if it will work yet. \u00a0Stay tuned for a later report on it. \u00a0(If anyone has used it and has tips they want to give me, I&#8217;d love &#8217;em!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Python on Mac<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most people suggested MacPorts. \u00a0I guess I&#8217;ll give that a whirl sometime. \u00a0I think I need to update Classic Galcon at some point anyways.\u00a0 (Okay, I did mention something about python.\u00a0 I failed at being 100% off-topic.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Virtual Machines<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t resolved all the issues yet. \u00a0Right now I&#8217;m a bit vague on how many Windows XP licenses I&#8217;m using. \u00a0I&#8217;ve got Bootcamp, VMWare, and Parallels all with XP Pro .. Does that count as 3 licenses? \u00a0Or one? \u00a0Hmmn. \u00a0I suppose I should figure that out. \u00a0I was able to get Parallels to work with Ubuntu by disabling shared folders, disabling the sync time feature, and enabling the adaptive hypervisor.
